FOOD SERVICE ASSISTANT I DEFINITION:
Under direction of the Food Service Director, performs a full range of food preparation and serving duties; cleans kitchen equipment, utensils and facilities.
Receives immediate direction from the Food Service Lead or a Food Service Assistant II/III.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this position may include, but are not limited to, the following:
? Assists in setting up serving line and restocking serving line between serving periods.
? Assist in serving students, faculty and staff in a fast and friendly manner.
? Utilize a computerized point of sale system.
Cashier during meal periods.
? Maintain cleanliness of work area and ensure that good sanitation practices are followed.
? Wash pots, pans, utensils, and other baking and cooking equipment.
? Assist with portioning and preparing hot and cold entrees and side dishes as directed.
? Operate kitchen equipment such as the oven, slicer, and mixer.
? Restock supplies of eating utensils, napkins, and condiments.
? Complete daily production reports and check for accuracy before filing.
? May assist in loading delivery vehicles.
? May assist with receiving and storing of deliveries at central kitchen.
? May assist with catering orders and special functions.
? Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
? Basic methods of preparing and cooking foods in large quantities.
? Basic principles of kitchen sanitation and health practices.
? Basic kitchen utensils and equipment.
? Basic arithmetic.
? Safe work practices.
Ability to:
? Operate a District delivery vehicle safely.
? Perform manual labor safely.
? Learn to operate cafeteria equipment.
? Learn to cashier accurately and quickly ? Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
? Communicate in writing for the purposes of utilizing the District's e-mail, and other correspondence.
? Add multiple items quickly and correctly.
? Work in a quick-paced environment with set time schedules.
Perform efficiently under pressure and remain flexible with changing circumstances.
? Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND
Experience:
? Education equivalent to completion of 12th grade.
? One year of paid experience in preparing large quantities of food.
? Valid California driver's license.
? Completion of adult school or college courses in nutrition and sanitation is desirable.
? Possess or obtain valid Food Handler Card within 30 days of hire.
Renew every three (3) years.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS of this position are, but not limited to, the following:
Ability to:
? See for purposes of reading directions, recipes, menus and other printed matter.
? Understand speech at normal levels in person or on the telephone.
? Communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person or on the telephone.
? Operate kitchen equipment such as convection ovens and slicers with dexterity.
? Work rapidly and use both hands to prepare food.
? Routinely lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds and to occasionally lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 55 pounds.
